Message from the Head of Department

UPT’s Law Department is one of the leading Law Schools in Portugal and a striving international hub for Legal Research and Teaching. The Department’s research unit, IJP, is ranked amongst the better ratted legal research units in Portugal, by the National Funding Agency and is internationally acknowledge as one of the best Comparative and European Law research units in the world. IJP is a founding member of the international “Legal Research Units network” bringing together outstanding legal research units from around the world. IJP is also a member of the American Society of Comparative Law.

The Law Department has a young and lively Faculty, committed with world standard cutting hedge research and ground-breaking teaching methodologies, all this resulting in a tremendously exciting learning and living environment.

Our international programmes are fully delivered in English, by an international Faculty that includes 10 different nationalities. The Law Department believes that Law is not a national phenomenon; in fact, Law is a Global issue and Legal Sciences are Global Sciences, requiring a Global, holistic approach. That is why we approach law in a new materialist way, we research Law in context and Law in action, we perform empirical Legal Studies and we teach Law for Global Lawyers. And we do all that with our Global partnership network in our beautiful city of Oporto, European Best Destination Award 2014.

I truly hope to welcome you soon.

Maria Manuela Magalhães Silva

HoD, Chair Global Constitutional Law
